The department of Journalism and Communication offers a two year Diploma in Journalism and Communication. The two year programme is designed to equip students with skills for accurate interpretation and reporting of news events. It prepares students for careers in the print, broadcast and electronic media. Graduates can also work in Public Relations, Information packaging and dissemination services, the Publishing Industry and Consultancy in any of these areas.
Classes start from 0800 to 1600 hours from Monday to Friday with Friday afternoons set aside for co-curricular activities.
Students go through theoretical and practical training for 18 months after which they go for an internship for 6 months to a media or communication organisation where they are expected to marry the acquired classroom theory with the practical aspects of trade. Upon successful completion of the 2 years of study, students are awarded a Diploma in Journalism and Communication.
Enrolment is done in January and July each year.
The entry qualifications dimension
NORMAL ENTRY
To be admitted to the programme, a candidate must have:
• A Minimum of 5 ‘O’ level passes including English language.
• A Minimum of 2 ‘A’ Level passes.
SPECIAL ENTRY
The candidate should be a practicing media person, Public Relations practitioner, Information Services Personnel. Prospective students with relevant degrees or diplomas can apply.
NB. The candidate should produce evidence from an employer that they are employed or proof of certificates.
MATURE ENTRY
• A Candidate must have 5 ‘O’ Levels including English Language.
• He or she should be 25 years and above.
MODE OF STUDY
All students admitted to the Diploma in Journalism and Communication programme are required to attend classes, and strictly no correspondence. Students on the 2 year programme will attend classes for 18 months and there after go on an industrial attachment for 6 months. If unable to continue classes for any reason, students are required to notify the college so that the contract is officially terminated.
